Open Water Swimming

We welcome all swimmers, 10 years old and upwards, as long as you can swim 400m! If this is your first foray following the temperature down, are out of practice, or need a confidence boost, we highly recommend joining our Introduction to Cold Water Swimming and Immersion course. The course is very informative about safely open water swimming in lakes & other types of locations during the cold water season. Swimming throughout winter gives you the opportunity to see what your body can manage, the environments it can withstand and strengthen through. We encourage you to let go of any expectations about distance and time spent swimming and instead find space to breathe, immerse in nature and reconnect with yourself.

Read this before you Book

  • All swimmers under 16 are required to wear a wetsuit & tow float. All swimmers over 16 must either wear a bright hat or tow float, available for sale and hire from The Beach SHAC. 
  • All swimmers must keep their distance from other swimmers and to sight/lift head regularly, pass on the inside
  • Non-participating public are not allowed on the beach
  • Swimmers must be over 10 years old
  • Swimmers must be logged into the system and have a band before entering the water

Open Water Swimming – Further Info:

We have a fully stocked swim shop at The Lagoon with hats, gloves, booties, wetsuits, dry robes etc available for whenever the need arises. We encourage you to listen to your body to make an informed decision about what neoprene you wear and where you wear it! If you have been following the temperature down from Summer in skins (using your Bioprene reserves!) and would like to explore the unfamiliar, we are here to support you. It is important you support your body and remain acclimatised and consistent in your approach, swimming regularly in cold water (and maybe supplementing with cold showers/baths).

Our sessions are a great way to meet other new swimmers and offer the potential to find swimming buddies. It is well documented that cold water swimming can boost the immune system, improve circulation and reduce stress.

During our Cold Water season our swim course at The Lagoon is a 200m loop and is ideal for experienced open water swimmers and beginners alike. The course is set out so that swimmers are no further than 15m away from safety at any point and is watched over by our team of RLSS Open Water Lifeguards making it one of the safest cold water swim venues in the country. During our winter season we reduce the swim course loop to ensure swimmers’ safety and comfort. As the temperature dips, so too does the length of time swimmers will be in the water. Re-warming gently by the fire with a warm drink whilst chatting to like-minded souls becomes a huge part of the cold water swim experience. Not to be missed!

    Open Water Swimming Stroke Analysis:
    Whatever your current swimming ability there is always room to improve & become the most efficient swimmer that you can be. If you are looking to improve your Open Water Swimming technique we can arrange a Stroke Analysis session on either a 1:1 or private group basis with one of our Open Water swimming coaches. They will identify parts of your stroke that could be adjusted to improve your technique and efficiency and teach you how to implement the necessary changes.
